Truth Without Lies - The Real Meaning of Christmas

The hustle and bustle of this holiday season can bring back so many memories. I can remember as a little girl the thrilling excitement of Christmas morning with all the gifts and toys I knew I’d find under the Christmas tree. The countdown to the last day was usually the hardest. Oh, how time would stand so still while eager little hearts and sounds of giggles filled the air each night.

Christmas was the happiest time of the year for me. What I remember most is the waking up in the wee hours of the morning with my older brother, running down the stairs while keeping careful not to trip, and seeing who can hit under the tree to grab the first present.

Mother had a gift for embellishing a Christmas tree. Her adornment was so beautifully and skillfully put together it made us marvel every time we glanced at it. Its splendor of dainty grace and the delicate ornaments that hung on each limb sparkled throughout the entire home, while daddy’s music filled the air with holiday joy. It made one want to live in that moment of beautiful serenity forever.

I grew up believing in Santa Claus, reindeers, and elves. I believed in the North Pole and fairies and hoped that I had been a good girl that year so that Santa would bring all the lovely things I had put on my Christmas list.

But I remember the disappointing feeling I felt the night I believed I had missed Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer by the seconds. He had come into my bedroom, given me a kiss and then flew away, so I was told. If I had just awakened a tidbit sooner, I could have beheld one of the most glorious miracles of time. My heart was broken.

Over the years, I have learned that Jesus and Santa Claus cannot share the same space, no, not even for a moment of what appears as a harmless and cute flight of the imagination. The Lord said that He will not share His glory with anyone or anything. He must be first, for He will come second to none. How then can we as believers contribute or allow from our pulpits the idea that Santa Claus really exist?

We all know that Jesus was not born on December 25. However, it is the date that the world has chosen to commemorate the celebration and birth of our King. But you’ll find that even theologians will argue if this holiday should be celebrated at all.

My answer to that is simply this. According to 1 John 1, Jesus came to earth and lived among men, and if He lived among men, then I’m sure He did what human beings did. He had to bathe; if He didn’t, He’d smell awfully bad. When He was a baby, His mother Mary had to change His diapers, for if she hadn’t, He would be exposed to a horrible booty rash. He had to eat; if He didn’t, He would have gotten terribly ill. Also, there are many Biblical stories that tell me that He was also influence by His culture; His parents paid taxes, went to weddings, annual feasts, danced, laughed and yes, I believe celebrated birthdays.

As a proud mother of three, I remember celebrating the Terrific Two’s, Triumphant Three’s, and the Funtastic Four’s; I don’t think Mary was any different from you and me. So whether Christmas is considered a pagan holiday or not, I choose to celebrate the very fact that my Savior was born and am glad to have the freedom to do so.

While there is absolutely nothing wrong with Christmas trees, gift exchanging, or setting aside time to spend quality time with family and friends, anything that takes away from the truth and glory of what Jesus’ Birth truly represents is a thief and a robber. The famous tales and fables of Old Saint Nick is just that, a false and improbable account of cute lies to teach a moral. If you are good, Santa will bring you presents they say. It almost sounds like the resounding religious beliefs that if you are a good person and do good works you can go to Heaven.

People often got mad at Jesus when He spoke the truth on things that convicted and pricked their hearts. When Jesus brought to light their hypocrisies, pride, and dared to expose the idols they worshiped, they wanted to crucify Him. Fast forward to the 21st Century and you’ll find that nothing much has changed.

Santa Claus is an idol that hangs high on the throne of many hearts and homes today. When you speak against him, you will find that people will lash out in his defense. Oh, how you risk the chance of becoming an unpopular Jesus freak when you expose the idols we’ve allowed to sit on the thrones of our hearts.

Jesus’ family traveled every year to celebrate the annual feast just like some of us have made traditions of reuniting with family members and friends each year. All the way and up until Jesus was 12 years old did they travel to Jerusalem. Like you and I today, they ate, worshipped, and celebrated. Plainly put, they partied.

But one day, after the close of the annual feast and while making their journey back home, the family realized that they had lost Jesus. I can only conclude that they had been so caught up in musing over such a great time that they actually didn’t realized that one of their family members were missing. I’m sure they reminisced about many things, like the people they hadn’t seen in like forever, the great food, and worship.

Of course, Jesus himself wasn’t really lost. He was about His Father’s business teaching and preaching the Kingdom of Heaven. But OMG (oh my gosh) the family had lost their child, and it wasn’t until they were in one day’s route that they realized He wasn’t anywhere to be found. It then took three days to find him. Can you imagine that? Read Luke 2:41-52.

How many of us have lost Jesus in the Feast? How many of us have gotten so wrapped up into buying gifts and decking the halls only to be stressed with the bills afterward? How many will actually go into further debt because they somehow feel obligated to fulfill the demands that Christmas brings? If you are in the process of preparing for your yearly grand feast, has the Lord Jesus been given His rightful place? Are we singing Santa Claus Is Coming To Town or O’ Little Town of Bethlehem? After all is said and done, have we sincerely observed the true meaning of Christmas?

The real meaning of Christmas is rejoicing and celebrating in the fact that God gave His only Son so that we could have eternal life. The greatest gift ever given to man was the gift of salvation. If it hadn’t been for His birth, there would be no Christmas. So while there is nothing wrong with the celebration, remember up and foremost that Jesus is the reason for the season.

Christian parents, I encourage you to teach your children the true meaning of this blessed holiday. Impart to them truth without the ties of lies and old fables and legends that neither bring glory nor honor to God. Celebrate, have fun, and rejoice! Glorify the King of kings and Lord of lords and worship Him in the beauty of holiness. Give Jesus Christ the Son of the living God the platform that only He deserves. Let the world have their Santa but give me Jesus. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

Have You Lost Your Mind?

Is your brain tired? Do many thoughts invade your mind and ultimately leave you stressed out?

Every battle begins in the mind. Your mind can be the devil’s playground if you do not stand at guard to resist and reject evil and unwholesome thoughts in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 4:7). Many people struggle because they have allowed their thought life to govern their actions.

The Bible addresses the topic of how to cope with the mind. Because we have a thought life, we are admonished in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to cast down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and to bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Our life will change when our thought life changes. While some thoughts originate with us, others come directly from the enemy. Our mind is subject to follow unbalanced and unhealthy thoughts and emotions, which will eventually cause us to make decisions that, will take us off course and out of the will of God.

We must not compromise or desensitize this topic for fear of being considered too spiritual or too deep. Christian warfare involves bringing all our thoughts into direct alignment with the Word and the will of God. The church today is too often tempted to meet the challenges of the world by carnal means and by using worldly weapons, i.e., psychology, philosophy, humanistic wisdom, etc. These cannot serve as a replacement for the fundamental lifestyle of prayer and an uncompromising commitment to the Word of God.

We as believers overcome our adversary by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony. We must tirelessly say “NO!” to the devil, temptation, and sin because failure to do so will lead to immorality and spiritual death.

Be resolute and determine to fill your mind with God’s Word. Set a watch to refuse to allow your eyes and ears to be an instrument to any worthless or evil thing. By doing this, you will obtain the mind of Christ, the peace of God, and rest for your soul.

How Closely Related Are You to a F.A.R.T.? Let's Find Out

Have you ever ran across a F.A.R.T.? Yes, I said it … a F.A.R.T!!! FART, FART, FART! There, I said it again. I can just hear the “gasps”, the “eh’s”, and can even envision the disgruntled religious twisted face gestures.

Now, before you start busting my chops about crude humor, tact, or the like, let’s first get rid of the “OMGosh, oh, no she didn’t!” mindset. For at the end of this blog, you just might find out a little bit more about yourself and how closely related you just may be to a good old F.A.R.T.

A couple of years ago, I wrote a blog about roses and the fragrances they possess. This blog is definitely not about roses and sweet smelling fragrances, on the contrary, it’s about the smelly, stinking thinking we can sometimes possess and emit.

Ever notice how much emphasis is placed on our outward appearance? Society has placed such enormous importance and value from the clothes we wear to the type of gel or mouse we use in our hair. Nothing wrong with looking dapper, for I myself enjoy and appreciate the art of fashion, but this passion should never exceed or come close to competing with the inner beauty that should reside within each us.

God is much more concerned with what’s taking place in our hearts than what we look like on the outside. Jesus said, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.” (Matthew 23:27) For their religion was outward in form with no inward godliness of the heart. They were all about ‘traditions’ and keeping the letter of the law by their own selfish interpretations, and they occupied their office all in the name of the Lord, but their lives were morally lax and worldly.

I know that anything that is unclean usually tends to stink big time. That’s how the lives of the Pharisees and Sadducees appeared to Jesus because He saw right through their impious funk. You see, they were often exposed for the hardness of their hearts and for their religious hypocrisies. Yet, many times they attempted to trip up Jesus by slapping down Scriptures and quotes from the fathers of old, but our courageous Lord would openly reprove them every time revealing their wickedness, double-standards, pretense, two-facedness, and insincerity.

Much like today, the spirit of the Pharisees (far-to-see) and the Sadducees (sad-to-see) still moves and envelops the hearts of many. They are what I call F.A.R.T.s – Fanatical, Analytical, Religious, Tarts, whose only aim is fulfilling church quota, attendance, and looking pious in the public eye. It is a fault-finding, overly critical, insensitive, behavior that is found WORKING rather than WORSHIPING.

F.A.R.T.s are constantly pointing the finger at others not recognizing that the same hand that points the finger has four fingers pointing right back at you. F.A.R.T.s are ready to throw you under the bus or into a den of lions saying, “See, see, doesn’t the Scriptures say …” all while Jesus is extending out His loving hands and saying, “I forgive you, now go and sin no more”. This hypocritical mindset sees everyone faults but never its own and will be the first one to shout, “Off with her head!”

The F.A.R.T. mentality is not kind or gracious and its mother Supercilious has made certain that they are planted on every corner of Condescending Circle Drive. They sport their shades of pride which blinds them and they are cloaked in the draperies of arrogance that hang from the hem of their garments. The flicker of their superiority shrouds and poisons the thought process so they fail to realize that genuine change takes place from the inside first and then emanates on the outside, not the other way around.

F.A.R.T.s never truly understand the JOY of the Lord or experience the bona fide liberty wherein Christ has made us free because they are so caught up in doctrines of men, which makes the Word of God of non effect.

Vow today that you will not be a F.A.R.T. and you will disallow the stinking thinking of the Pharisees and Sadducees attitude to dominate or influence your life. Vow today that you will live your life by putting on the cloak of humility and love others through their process of change regardless of how messy or smelly it is. It is always helpful to remember that you too are still a work in progress.

When you ‘buss a F.A.R.T.” just say excuse me. You’d be surprised how a little spray of meekness can dissolve the bad aromas of an old F.A.R.T.

Well, that's JUST ME and who I AM! Well, maybe that's the problem!

Ya' think? Ever heard those words before? I've had to make a conscious decision to smile more and configure my facial expressions to "nice".

My daughter told me during dinner one day that I look like a "snob" and people were probably afraid to approach me due to it; then my sister confirmed it. I was "offended" at first thinking "Gee, I'm a pretty nice and friendly person. How in the world would you think that?". But what I thought and what my body expression gave off were two different things. We have got to be WILLING to CHANGE.

I'm not talking about the petty people who nick-pick and criticize everything you do right or wrong. There are some people you will never please. What I'm talking about is becoming more conscious of your body language that sometimes speaks louder than words.

Jesus, the Gardener and Cultivator of our Souls

As believers and followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, we have been called to produce. To produce means to yield something, to bring forth, or bear something. Our lives are constantly producing ‘something’. Let’s take a closer look at the ‘something’ we are called to yield or bring forth. Last week we looked at how the rain, wildflowers, weeds and tall grass, garden maintenance, abiding in the vine, and digging can impact our garden’s growth and expansion.

Today, I would like us to center our focus on the soil. The soil is one of the most important elements in producing a beautiful and healthy garden. But what type of soil will we find in our garden?

Soil is the top layer of most of the Earth’s land surface. It contains the unconsolidated elements of rock erosion, organic decay, bacteria, and fungi.

There are five soil-forming factors:
1. the parent material: the primary material from which the soil is formed i.e. bedrock, organic material, an old soil surface, or a deposit from water, wind, glaciers, or volcanoes
2. climate: the weathering forces such as heat, rain, ice, snow, wind, sunshine, and other environmental forces that break down parent material and affect how fast or slow soil formation processes go
3. organisms: all plants and animals living in or on the soil (including micro-organisms and humans)
4. topography: the location of a soil
5. time: all of the above factors assert themselves over time

In Mark 4, Jesus tells a parable about the sower who went out to sow:

First case: The WAYSIDE

Some seeds fell by the side of the tough, hard path where the soil was not broken up and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. Not only could the seed not get beneath the surface, but it was trampled down and afterwards picked up and devoured by the fowls.

Second case: The STONY or ROCKY ground
And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth -- "the rocky ground" is a ground that has a thin surface of earth covering the rocky place.

Third case: The THORNY ground
And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit -- This case is that of the ground not thoroughly cleaned of the thistles, thorns, and weeds which rising above the good seed, "choke" it. The “thorns” smother the seed reducing it of any light and air, as it drains away the moisture and richness of the soil. Thus it becomes unfruitful; although it grows, it never ripens to full maturity.

The evil here is neither a hard nor a shallow soil, for there is enough softness and depth; but it is the existence that is living within the soil that draws all the nutrients of it away to itself, and so starves the plant.

Fourth case: The GOOD ground
And other fell on good ground and did yield fruit. The qualities of this last soil are the reverse of the other three soils. It is soft and tender, it has depth that allows the seed to take firm root, receives the necessary moisture that provides vitality and strength, and it is also clean grounds. In this type of environment, the seed brings forth fruit.

Are we allowing the deposits of God’s Word to fill our lives? Do we permit the storms of life to break up our stony and hard places? What forms and shapes us, the love of God or pressures of life? Does the climate of our circumstances break us down or build us up? Are we pliable or hard and rocky? Is our garden planted by the rivers of water (Psalm 1)? Do we see growth over a period of time?

We must allow the Word of God to cultivate our hearts so that we can experience an outpouring of the manifestation of His awesome power. In time, we will see our gardens filled with the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; and against such there is no law (Gal. 5:22-23).

Do you know About Him or Do you KNOW HIM?

To know only about an individual is never enough evidence to make a reasonable and sound judgment about one's character. Sure we read or hear stories about people all the time, but basing our assumptions only the premise of what others have said can be very dangerous and misleading. We can structure a false and unfair personal view and judgment about them without really having or knowing all the facts.

Sometimes the outside of a book can appear coarse and hard, but the saying, 'never judge a book by its cover', does hold some depth. Over the years, I've gotten to know people for myself, and in that, I have learned a valuable lesson. Not everything said is always true.

To know means to identify, recognize, distinguish; it is an action word, for example, I know (or recognize) the book is on the shelf, I know where the coffee is, I know my schedule, or I know which one is mine (identification). You are collecting information and facts about people and things all the time. You learn to identify characters, distinguish the difference between cultures and religion, and so on.

But to know is not enough and you will find that many people usually stay at this first phase - the knowing. They know that it's going to rain or the road is dangerous because they have heard or read some article about it. I can know that the weather is bad and the roads are dangerous and yet, still choose to ignore it. Again, this phase is only a collection of information.

The word knowledge, is a noun, and in view of this topic, means information, facts, and data acquired through a skill, experience, or acquaintance. This is the second phase. Many of us know about God, we may have some knowledge about Scripture, but knowledge without understanding is as a light fixture without bulbs. The Scripture says that the entrance of thy words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple (Psalms 119:130).

The word understanding means the ability to grasp, perceive, and explain the meaning or the nature of something or somebody. When I begin to grasp or perceive the value of the knowledge (the information) of God's Word and how it applies to me, this is called understanding. It is like a light bulb goes off and you say, "Ahh".

The word wisdom means judgment or good sense that comes from the knowledge and experience needed to make sensible decisions. It is the accumulated learning of life in a particular sphere of activity or interest that is gained through your experience.

Proverbs 1:5 says that a wise man will hear and will increase in learning. The more you learn is the wiser you become in that area. But if you do not know God for yourself, if you do not open the Bible to read the personal love letters that are written to you, if you only base your faith or belief on the premise of what others have to say, then you risk the possibility of facing a great danger because people can lead you astray.

God is not looking for religion, tradition, superstition, or fiction; he desires and longs for personal intimacy with his beloved. That's you! I challenge you to know God for yourself. Don't just know about Him, KNOW HIM in the full knowledge of His goodness and grace.
He's real folks . . .

We must be willing to alter and adjust so that the process of making or becoming different can take place.

Serving God is more than our weekly church attendance and having titles or positions. You’d be surprised at the many pews that are filled with people who faithfully attend church services, only to walk out the same way they walked in.

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise though. In Jesus’ days, the temples were filled with such people; they were called the Pharisees and the Sadducees. The Pharisees and the Sadducees were two of the most prominent religious groups in Judaism. Their religion was outward in form with no inward godliness of heart (Matt. 23:25). They were all about ‘traditions’ and keeping the letter of the law by their own interpretations.

They occupied their ‘office’ all in the name of the Lord, but their lives were morally lax and worldly. While appearing to hold to the laws of God, they really denied many of the teachings when they opposed Jesus’ wisdom and miracles. They’re obsession with ‘keeping the letter of the law’ blinded them from the truth that they were actually doing quite the opposite as they refused to recognize the depravity of their own nature.

If we look around today, we will see the spirit of the 21st Century Pharisees and Sadducees moving in our midst; this mindset or spirit still flows today. It is ‘working’ rather than ‘worshipping’. This spirit sits on the church boards, serves communion, handles the Lord’s money, etc.

Jesus’ message is ‘change’ and ‘repent’. The word change, in this case, is a noun, and it is the process in making or becoming different. To change in its verb form means alter or adjust. The word repent means to be sorry, apologize, or ask forgiveness. We must be willing to alter and adjust so that the process of making or becoming different can take place.
2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.” God’s Word should challenge us to change daily. The words Jesus spoke often pricked or offended the Pharisees and Sadducees because of their wicked ways. Does God’s Word offend or prick our hearts, or does it cause us to humble ourselves and repent?

PATIENCE IS A QUALITY YOU ADMIRE IN THE DRIVER BEHIND YOU AND SCORN IN THE ONE AHEAD.

Patience—the ability to wait; endurance, staying power, fortitude; ability to bear prolonged hardship, pain, or exertion; stamina; the survival or persistence of something despite the ravages of time; lack of complaint

It is not how you start but how you end. The Bible says that the end of a thing is better than the beginning of a thing (Eccl. 7:8-9).

Our days are identical suitcases—all the same sizes–but some people can pack more into them than others. While accepting the path of God for your life, whether it seems rough or smooth, remember that God is at work in you.

Although learning to trust in times of adversity has its difficulties, facing unexpected changes opens the opportunity for growth. Hebrews 6:12 encourages us to be followers of them who through faith and patience inherited the promises of God.

We are called to run this race with an unruffled and vigorous persistence. The appointed course of the race is set and we must strip ourselves of every unnecessary weight and the sins that so easily entangles us.

Remember, the race is not for the swift nor the battle for the strong but for those who endures to the end.

DON’T MISTAKE ACTIVITY FOR ACHIEVEMENT. BUSYNESS DOES NOT EQUAL PRODUCTIVENESS, part 2

When we assemble ourselves as a united body of people whether in a public assembly or a private gathering, what happens? Does the power of God flow in our meetings? Are people’s lives being transformed? Is the power of the Word actively flooding our hearts causing radical changes? Are people being refreshed, restored, and renewed? Is the Word of God bringing conviction and repentance? Are people coming in one way but leaving differently?

Although these questions may sound challenging to pastors and ministry leaders, it is a relevant subject that we need to talk about as a church. I have said it so often and will say it again, churches are getting old but not growing. Why?

There are many attributing factors, and though I may not touch all areas today, it is my desire to delve deeper into this subject in my future newsletters.

What marks the success of a growing church? Is it the size or look of the building? Can we base it on the amount of tithes and offering collected or the building fund drive? Is it the accumulative and growing register, prolonged existence of church membership, or longevity of leadership? Is it based on the size of the worship team or band? How about the programs we put together, which is comprised of the same circle of people and similar to last years agenda?

While some of these can have some value and weight to what we call “ministry”, the question is still being asked, how effective is this ministry, this church, and what we do?

One of the marks of a growing church is the youth. Our youth is a relevant part of God’s Kingdom. Sad to say, many churches have forgotten about our youth. We try to win them over by singing “How Great Thou Art”, not understanding that it is after they have come into the fold that they will truly understand how great and awesome He is.

Remember when Jesus said follow me, and I will make you fishers of men, and he that win souls is wise? Well, please understand that all fish do not take the same bait. Your teenage son or daughter may not embrace the songs, music, and fashion that inspired you in your days or even today. Sometimes we forget and our drive to cause them to change results in frustration on both parties and does more damage than good. The same Scripture that commands children to honor their father and mother also says parents do not provoke your children to wrath (Ephesians 6).

Rest assure that God is more concerned with people’s heart and soul than they are looking on the outside. Change begins from the inside out.

We need to teach people how to live but allow the Holy Spirit to bring the conviction. Lead others to Christ by your love, compassion, and witness as opposed to teaching a dogmatic doctrine set of church rules.

Doctrine is a body of ideas that are taught to people as truthful or correct. While doctrine in of itself is not a bad thing, we must proceed with caution, being careful that the rules or principles that form the basis of a belief or policy are not a distorted view or faulty interpretation of the Word of God.

While there is a personal responsibility every believer must take, there is also a heavy liability placed on leadership. We must be careful that our churches have not become a social gathering or a lukewarm container where the power of God is diminished and the Holy Spirit grieved by the traditions of men.

Remember, busyness does not equal productiveness. This newsletter is geared to cause us to look within and see where we can become a better church, a better people, a more effective ministry where those who are hurting or lost can find rest, hope, and the will of God for their lives.

Predestined? What Does it Mean?

I wrote this blog because of a question that someone asked me today. What does it mean when we say we are predestined by God? Let's see what the Bible says about it.

First, let’s define what predestined/predestinate means: destined, fated, or determined beforehand. When something is predestined, it means it has already been determined beforehand what it should be.

For example, the butterfly, before it becomes a butterfly, is a caterpillar. So, the caterpillar is predestined to become a butterfly, right? It goes through a process called metamorphosis in which its body goes through a complete transformation. I discuss the spiritual aspect of this in greater detail in my book.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life”. We can conclude from this Scripture alone that God has predestined us to become His children and receive the benefits of His salvation. However, this salvation comes through our belief/faith in Jesus and the finished work of the Cross. Additional Scriptures to read on predestination are Ephesians 1:4-5 and Romans 8:28-30.

I’d like to summarize by using another analogy of a ship that is on its way to Heaven. The ship, which is the church, is chosen by God to be His very own precious vessel. Jesus is the Captain of this wonderful ship and those who desire to be a part can come aboard through the acceptance of Christ Jesus. As long as an individual remains on the ship and continues his or her relationship with the Captain (Jesus), he safely and securely remains amongst the chosen or elected people of God.

But because this election is contingent upon one’s union, comradeship, fellowship, obedience, and partnership with God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Captain of the ship, if he chooses to abandon ship, then he ceases to be amid, among, in the course of, in the company, or in the midst of the chosen. Predestination relates to us about the ship’s purpose and final destination and what the Father has prepared and planned for those who choose to remain on it. Everyone is invited by the goodness and love of God to come abroad the elect ship. This is done through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Have You Gone Out Full Only to Return Empty?

Read the Book of Ruth

How many of us have gone out ready to win the world, full of hope, dreams, and ambitions only to return gleaning sheaves of empty hopes and promises? Raped and victimized by this thing call life. That education you invested so much time and money or that marriage of many years that ended up in heart-breaking divorce, the ministry your poured into, the people you faithfully served that turned out to be a disappointment, the business deal that never took off, or the business that went bankrupt? How about the dream of motherhood and life-long parenting, only for it to be shattered by miscarriages, the inability to conceive, or death?

Have you gone out full like Naomi, which means "pleasant, lovely, and delightful", only to come back Mara, "bitter and sad"? Naomi knew the joy of going out full and the devastation of coming back empty. She knew what it felt like to have dreams dissipate like smoke rings in thin air. Does this sound anything like you?

Jeremiah 29:11 speaks of God's designed plan for our lives. He has a purpose for our lives, but it is only when we acknowledge Him will that plan be revealed. Life is a grindstone, and whether it grinds you down or polishes you depends on what you are made of and your view of God. Do you believe that God is in control of your most difficult circumstance? Your circumstance may have surprised you, but it didn't catch God by surprise.

If you've gone out like Naomi only to come back empty, then may I suggest that you give the broken pieces of your wounded life to the only one who can put it back together again. God can heal a broken heart, but He has to have all the pieces.

Understanding My Spiritual Armor

Understanding the spiritual armor is a must for every believer. Learning the art of your spiritual weaponries and knowing how to use them when your path becomes vague and formless, unclear and ambiguous, will carry you through any crisis in life. From rejection, to betrayals, from abuse, to rape and fear, suicide, an...d abandonment, I found the formula to overcoming life's challenges by mastering and understanding my armor. Your spiritual armor is God's gift to you for fighting the GOOD fight of FAITH.

We are to walk the path the Father has designed for us with confidence, courage, and compassion. There is unequivocally nothing or no one that can stop you or the work of God in you, unless you give them permission. Don’t you know that no one can make you feel inferior without your consent? Knowing who you are and to whom you belong to is a central element to fulfilling one’s destiny.

When facing life's challenges, you must know when to take off your stilettos and know when to put on your combat boots. As you tread through the isms and schisms of life, you will find that the greaves that shield your feet will protect and keep you from becoming weak and impaired. God’s promises that His prevailing peace will empower you to maintain an inexorable march despite the enemies attempt to take you down; for HE IS the glory and lifter of your head.

Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it. So autograph your work with excellence. Do what you are called to do, beloved, and do it well. Do it in the power and strength of the Lord; for surely, the Lord will break asunder all plans and wicked devises.

If you are facing the turbulent storms and trials of life, it is helpful to often remember that the Lord of Hosts goes before you. So when you are tested, take courage, and in adversity, don’t flinch. For God has proven to be mighty in battle, faithful, and true. Shall He not rescue, deliver, and honor those who know and call upon His name? Be at peace, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.

WacKy Wednesday: The TEA PARTY

Excited about the invitation for the grand tea party the day had finally arrived. I arrayed myself with my dazzling fancy pashminas, jewelry, and snazzy stilettos to complement. The silky gloves looked stunningly beautiful as they caressed and glazed over my elbows. The stone on the fi...nger glistened as it captured and reflected the iridescent tints of the soft and silky fabric, while my wrists were embroidered in what appeared to be dancing icicles.

Engrossed in deep thought with the afternoon’s affair, I couldn’t help but to imagine the variety of palatable tea my lips were going to embrace. Would they have imported tea from the eastern world, exotic tea from the islands, or simply delicious flavors I had never tasted before? The delightful aromas that would inundate the night’s atmosphere were surely going to be a delightfully pleasant one.

As my mental depiction further submerged to the intense fancies of aristocratic elegance, I could foresee the lavishly embellished décor delicately pirouetting behind the scenes of chatter and laughter. Ooh, I couldn’t wait.

My journey there felt longer than normal, but once I arrived near my destination, I was astonished to see that there were people scattered everywhere and hardly places to park. I never imagined what would happen next.

Revelation has a way of kicking in at the oddest moments of my adventures. As I stared at the posse of people facing the courthouse, my enchanted filled evening of exquisite tea and fun camaraderie soon dissipated in thin air. So did the petit fours, scones, quiche hors d'ouvres, cherry tarts, chocolate truffles and the beautifully arrayed furnishings.

I was at a tea party alright!

The Task of the Leader is to Get His People from Where They Are to Where They Have Not Been

You’re not where you want to be but you’re not where you used to be, now that’s what you call PROGRESS. Shepherding or leading people is not a simple task as some suppose. Only those who are sent by God to fulfill the office of a pastor understand its heavy mandate. The countless late nights or early morning intercession for God’s guidance and direction while everyone sleeps, the constant interruption of telephone calls while you’re trying to have a romantic date with your spouse, the bickering of the people, and the never-ending criticism and table talk discussion of what you did or didn’t do are just a few to mention of what a leader has to endure.

Pastoring or leading people has its many challenges, and it’s an office that one must definitely be called to walk in. I heard someone once refer that Moses leading the Israelites was like herding cats. With all the drama that took place in his day, much has not changed in the 21st century.

The joke that Moses lost in the desert for 40 years but got everyone there eventually or if he had just asked Miriam for directions they would have arrived sooner has had its share of laughs. But the reality of that story in the book of Genesis and how it applies to us today is much deeper than a barrel of laughter. For in this particular story, it teaches us about the grave consequences that murmuring, complaining, and division can bring upon us.

A lesson repeated is a lesson not learned, but if you want to keep going around in circles, keep on complaining. You’ll soon find out, just like the Israelites did, but hopefully, not after 40 years; for it was not Moses but the people’s dissention and rebellion that kept them stuck in the wilderness.

Over the years, I have had leaders who patiently waited for me to mature, and I thank God they did. They loved me in my mess and my distress unconditionally. I probably would have walked out on me a long time ago, but they saw something in me, something through the eyes of faith and God’s love that just would not let me believe anything less than what the Father thought of me. Today, I thank my leaders who patiently showed me how to enter into the palace.

That is the mark of a good leader, the ability to wait while others grow. They suffer along with you while you talk about them, criticize them, hate them, mock them, and even try to belittle and overthrow them. Yet, they patiently wait for you to mature regardless of what you think or how you feel about them. They do what they do because they are CALLED to do what they do. In turn, the Lord blesses them with wisdom, unfolds His strategy and plan, and allows them to have those "meet with God intimate mountain top experiences" while gracing them with patience, love, LONGSUFFERING, and compassion for ALL people.

Although the cat-fights, whining, and tantrums that can take place is unbelievable, it is only because of God’s grace that you’ll find a good leader will outlive any adversity. Shepherds aren't a 24, 711 drive through with a mat that reads "Welcome, wipe your feet on me". But you'll find that many people will treat their leaders just that way.

If a man cannot be a Christian in the place he is, he cannot be a Christian anywhere. Whether you are a leader in the corporate world or a spiritual leader in ministry, even though people can behave so poorly, the fortitude that we have is not our own. Just like God told Moses and Joshua that He would be with them, so He will be with everyone who places his trust and total reliance in Him.

Sometimes We Are So Busy Adding Up Our Troubles That We Forget to Count Our Blessings

There are situations in my life that I have allowed to me off course. Sometimes troubles tend to surmount like gushing geysers, and before you realize what has happened, you’ve been swept off your feet and engulfed by the undercurrents of life. Ever had any of those?

The enemy has a way of hyping things up to make them appear more than they really are, but during conflict and hardship, you must remember one thing - STAY FOCUSED! For one moment of a negative thought can swiftly slip you into the plains of despondency. Forgetting about God, faith, and His Word in times like these is NEVER an option.

How do we do this in a practical way, in every day life, walking and talking? There’s a neat little scripture that reads, “Overcome evil with good.” I like to think of it as “replacement theorem.” If a person is so busy focusing on the good, and trying to do good, and to be of good cheer, when do they have to for the evil? Overcome bad thoughts with intently focusing on good thoughts. Overcome bad behavior by doing something good and productive and fruitful. If you are busy being good, the pity parties go away, and and so does the meddling, discord, and disconnects in life; then peace, happiness, and goodness can begin to flow.

Changing your focus is like changing directions when driving. If that road doesn't work, change course. Quit the stinking thinking! Think on whatever is lovely, holy, good, positive, productive … with choice, by practice, on purpose with intent. If a person is busy counting their blessings, they surely not busy counting their miseries and discouraging troubles, right? Spring is a good time for new growth and change in direction and old habits.

We are like actors; we will play either the part of the victim or the victor. Which one are you? When the enemy reminds you of what you are lacking, remind yourself of what you do have. When you are through counting, you will realize how blessed you truly are, and often immeasurably blessed.

Psalms 77:11, 12 says “I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old, I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.” Allow the wind of the Holy Spirit and the love of God to raise you above your circumstances.

Wishbone or Backbone

How many times have you come across the bullies of life? Well, Joshua knew exactly what it felt to have to deal with such an annoying ogre. While giants were in the land scoffing, mocking, and parading with threatening insults, he learned to place his reliance and hope in God. His unwavering faith against the sadistic threats of the enemy caused him to hear the strategy and plan of God, which plunged him straight into victory and entering the Promised Land.

If you are facing giants like Joshua, though learning to stand still can prove to be a test, it is essential for receiving the heavenly mandate from God. Sometimes an eye for an eye or a foot for a foot sounds a lot simpler but it is only the enemy’s attempt to side track you and take you off course.

When things go wrong, don’t go wrong with them. Stand your ground and be encouraged, for God said he will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you.

Many a good man has failed because he had his wishbone where his backbone should have been.

What Fragrance Do You Possess?

Last year, I had the pleasure of visiting several homes for the Annual Rose Tour in Whitewright. I was awestruck by the diversity of each garden as we went from house to house.

I saw backyards filled with roses, irises, birdhouses, ponds, and many other gorgeous bouquets of plant life. The flowers generated an amazing ambiance that perfumed the air with pleasant aromas. I saw and smelled honey suckles for the first time and had the pleasure of tasting one too.

What struck me the most was the diversity of fragrances the floras produced. In one garden, there was an assemblage of multicolored roses displayed in a row, so I decided to smell each group individually. Every colored rose possessed an enjoyable but distinct aroma. I couldn’t believe how they could all be so alike, yet so different, but each was lovely in its own right.

Upon leaving, not far away, sat a cluster of red roses identical to the ones I had recently smelled. I couldn’t help myself, so I decided to take one last whiff. Ironically, they produced no scent. “But aren’t these roses the same as the others?” I thought to myself.

You life is your garden and what you produce will be obvious to others. The Scripture says in I Peter 2:9 that we are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar people; that we should show forth the praises of him who has called us from outer darkness and into His marvelous light.

It is not enough to sit with others we think are like us and expect that this method alone will change us. Going to church doesn’t save you and make you a Christian anymore than sitting among rose bushes will make you a rose. Christianity is not a religion but a lifestyle; it is a daily walk with the Savior, which requires every individual to take personal liability for their own life by picking up their cross to follow Jesus.

We have been set apart for God, and in that separation, there is something we must do. We must continually fill our hearts with His Word so that we can produce good fruit. When we faithfully commit to abiding in the Vine, we become the branches that bring forth the fruit of God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ (St. John 15:5).

What fragrances do you possess and generate? Will you permit the power of God’s Word to cultivate in you the fruit of the Spirit or will you just sit among the roses?

Keys to Finding Your Ruth and Boaz: Biblically Waiting Versus a 21st Century Profile

Society has implemented so many ways to finding the woman or man in your life that even Christians have fallen away from the basic fundamentals of finding a spouse the Biblical way. While setting up profiles and posting the prettiest photo of one’s self on a site has become the norm, it sounds more like a human cattle round up if you ask me. We may as well all line up and have an auction.

A wise man will not commit to a relationship with a woman based on shallow and superficial reasoning and emotions. He should do some researching first before making ties with someone he barely knows.

Boaz was a wise man. He knew exactly who Ruth was and had her “checked out” before getting involved with her. There were three important elements that were important to Boaz: 1) spiritual stability, 2) personal loyalty, 3) character. He knew of her faithfulness to God, commitment to her mother in-law Naomi, and of her reputation.

Boaz was a man of integrity. He was a man of what I call the FOUR P’s – He offered Ruth POSITION, PROTECTION, PROVISION, and was a man of PRAYER. And as a result of her connection to Boaz, she began to experience PROSPERITY.

Ruth was selfless and young enough that even after losing her first husband could have returned home and married again. Yet, her fidelity, commitment, and love for her mother in-law, Naomi, was more important than fulfilling her own desires. Ruth was a woman who knew her past, understood her present, and was moving toward her future. She also knew that with God, the world was her playground, but without God, she would just be played.

The inability to wait for God’s best and unwise choices can be a very costly price to pay. One thing I encourage women is to avoid the temptation of fishing for a man. Nothing is less attractive than a woman on the prowl out of desperation; for desperation will cause you to compromise your morals and settle for almost anything. You are more than likely to end up with a shark on your hands rather than a blessing, and for the men, one moment of pleasure may just end you hooked up with an inescapable piranha for the next eighteen years.

Women don’t need to look for Boaz or their knight in shining armor. If you are minding the Father’s business, you’ll be found by him. Let’s learn from Ruth example and how her prudent choices led her to be at the right place at the right time.

Ruth lost herself in the ministry of caring for someone else. Yet, without losing her sense of identity, she was a woman with confidence and had learned a lot from Naomi. In fact, she was Naomi’s spiritual backup when Naomi got a bit off track and began talking crazy.

My “type” is the Father’s best for me. Ladies, be encouraged because the Father knows exactly what thrills and excites us as women and knows just the “type” of man we need and has already made the provisions for it. For the men, let Boaz’s commendable and noble character serve as an example of what men should be.

Don't Put a Question Where God Has Placed a Period

There is no greater feeling than when I have genuinely cast my burden to the Lord. Ahhh . . . what a relief! It almost gives the appearance that I don't have a care in the world.

But why should I overwhelm myself with problems I know I cannot resolve on my own? If I’m going to worry, why pray? Learning to cast my fears, troubles, anxieties, and anything that can be considered and packaged into a care to the Lord has been a learning process. Over the years, I have resolved to walk in the rest and peace of God instead of musing over the "what if's". As a result, I’ve experienced an inner peace; one that truly passes all understanding.

But this did not come without trial and error. I’ve had my share of insomnia, cried tears to fill up the bathtub, and experienced overwhelming fear and heartache, and the more I focused on the problem, the more it grew like yeast.

However, when I redirected my attention to the Word of God and His promises, although the problems did not vanish away, I found my fears did. Instead of subjecting myself to the oppression, suppression, and depression, which were grimly gazing down at me like a predator ready to pounce on its prey, I became empowered and repositioned by the anointed Word of God.

My shift came because my thinking changed, and as a result, I was able to face my opposition perfectly hearing the instructions, strategy, and plan of God instead of panicking, being afraid, and clueless. No more did I see myself as a victim but a victor armed and dangerous.

The repositioning of our mind can quickly overturn the outcome of the battle. If you know who you are, whose you are, and to whom you belong to, then there is no trial in life that can defeat you.

Think of all that the Lord has brought you through already. This should be enough to bullet you into your next level. He didn't let you drown in the mess nor did He give up on you. He simply open doors, granted favor, or made a way. Sometimes, we just need a gentle reminder - the Lord takes care of His own.

Don't put a question mark where God puts a period. Be encouraged knowing that he who kneels before the Lord can stand before anything.

Psalms 55:22-23

Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

But You, O god, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction; bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in you.

He Who Gossips to You Will Be a Gossip of You

What does the Bible have to say about GOSSIP? Well, let’s first define what gossip means.

Gossip: scandalmonger, tattletale, Nosy Parker, chatter, blather, rumormonger, blabbermouth, bigmouth

There are many people who profess to be Christians. Yet, professing ones fidelity and love to Christ is more than mere words. It should be seen through the light of Christ within us on a daily basis. Don’t be fooled, it doesn’t take an Einstein to figure some things out. People will know us by the fruit hanging on our tree.

Scriptures tell us what is improper for God’s holy people. It admonishes us to keep away from all moral filth and evil. How many people have you heard say “Uh-huh, amen, and preach pastor”, yet, forget all that was taught in the lesson immediately as they walked out the church doors. James 1:22 says that we should not be hearers of the Word only but DOERS.

We live in a world where a corrupt society seeks to influence and defile our godly character and integrity. But a lack of vigilance and wisdom can lead you into the pitfalls of indiscretion and impudence, and before you know it, you are swept away and caught up in the dirt.

Proverbs 20:19 reads “He that goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets; therefore meddle not,” in other words, do not interfere, snoop, and gossip, “with him that flatters with his lips”. There is a reason why we should refrain from gossip.

1. Gossip separates and hurts friends (Proverbs 16:38)

2. Gossip causes damage by betraying confidence (Prov. 11:12-13)

3. Gossips are usually half-truths and distorted information

Those who behave in this manner do nothing but stir up trouble and cause dissention and division. That is why the Bible tells us to RUN (emphasis mine) or keep away from people who behave this way. A negative spirit is like poison ivy, it spreads quickly.

Let’s define the word deed: something done, an intentional act; actions. James 1:25 tells us that if we hear and do what is right that our deeds would be blessed. Have you ever wondered why your “deeds” were not successful or prosperous? Is the deed matching up with laying aside all moral filthiness and evil? Or are you operating in a deceitful spirit?

These are personal questions that should cause each of us to take a look inside and allow the light of the Holy Spirit to reveal what is really hidden in our hearts. When the unveiling begins, repent and then allow the grace of God’s forgiveness and faithfulness to cleanse and change you.

Let us be transformed by the renewing of our minds. If we put on the mind of Christ daily, our life will be transformed, our deeds will be blessed, and we will be a blessing to others.

The Journey

Life can bring with it discouraging winds that oftentimes can leave one drifting on the sea of despondency for extended periods. The rut of the dry places encountered in the course of one’s journey may lead one to a dead-end with feelings of hopelessness and a lost disposition. But not all dry places in life are the result of being lost. Sometimes God uses dry places as a forum for preparation.

In Exodus 3:8, when God met Moses at the burning bush, He told him that He was going to deliver His people from bondage and into a land flowing with "milk and honey”. Yet, Scripture discloses that when God delivered them, He led them directly into a "wilderness” where they spent the next 40 years.

Their wilderness experience had a purpose because the Bible tells us that there was a shorter route available that they could have taken and avoided the wilderness altogether (Exodus 13:17). But God told Moses, “I Am Who I Am”. This personal name of God means the God who is actively present with His people.

Trust and submission to God’s direction is the stepping stone that will bring you into your next level. Life is like a grindstone and whether it polishes you up or grinds you down depends on what you are made of.

Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a hope and a future”. Whenever God leads you somewhere, He has a purpose and a predestined place for you, even if the route is a long dry one.

Daily Pursuit

I would like to continue from last week’s thoughts on becoming the woman God wants me to be.

The pressure of everyday living can prove to be exhausting. If you are a woman, wife, or mother, you know the on-going demands that come with these responsibilities. The distractions that come as part of the package and the constant giving and pouring out to others but never enough time for “me” can all lead one to a place of weariness. At the end of the day, you are simply drained and the result is the thoughts of another day to try again.

Aspiring to become the Proverbs 31 woman is a daily pursuit of following God’s designed plan. But how can I fulfill my obligations with balance? How do I accomplish my daily goals with success while pursuing the plan of God for my personal growth? Where do I begin?

Everything has a beginning, so I have found that seeking God early in the morning, just before the break of day and before the house wakes up, is a good starting point. While I am still enough in His presence, the spontaneous flow of the Father’s thoughts begins to streamline into my heart showing and mapping out my success for the day.

It is like my spiritual tank is refueled and my corroded oil has been changed. My new wheels are spinning and ready to roll as my soul experiences a refreshing, restoring, and renewing. But missing these precious moments, I must admit, is like buttoning a shirt and realizing they were buttoned incorrectly, then undoing the whole thing and having to start all over . . . what a drag that can be.

It is when I prioritize and place God first that I find my days are a huge success and I am not emotionally, physically, and spiritually drained. God’s substance is enough to keep you. Allow Him to refuel you before the start of each new day, and as you are found in hot pursuit of God’s presence, may all your godly dreams and aspirations come true.

Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to Be ~ Part 1

Becoming the woman God wants me to be is more than just wishful thinking. It is an endless pursuit with daily longings to be just like Him. But with all the opposition and distraction one can face on a daily basis, becoming this woman has proven to be a lot easier said than done.

It takes perseverance, determination, and a fixed mind regardless of the falls and bruises along the way. It takes a “getting up attitude” even if it is your hundredth time and starting all over. It is looking at a scoffing, ridiculing world in the eye and declaring, “I am not genetically disposed to”, naming whatever your struggle is, “because the Greater One that resides in me will not give up on me”. It is having faith to see and going beyond what your natural eyes can see. It is daily falling at the feet of Jesus and surrendering all to the One who holds the blueprints of life in His hands.

At the end, you will find that all your troubles, all your obstacles, all the trials and storms of life you faced were merely classroom tools the Father used to prepare, sharpen, and equip you for a greater cause. So when the storms of life surmount, remember that God is working everything out, the good, the bad, and the ugly, ultimately for your benefit.

When Faced with Opposition, Take Your Position!

Discouragement and desperation are tools that the enemy uses to keep us from reaching our goal in Christ. From the beginning of time many have given up their dreams and hopes due to the incessant assaults from the enemy. This is why we are admonished in 2 Corinthians 10:5 to cast down every imagination and thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.

There are times we will feel like we want to concede defeat. The pressures of life dig at you without mercy. The relentless stress, anxiety, and demands of your problems increase as you find your ability to cope decreasing. You begin to lose your grip in life and eventually, you breakdown in despair.

The word discourage in its verb form means oppose, hinder, inhibit, prevent, stop, and suppress. It also means dishearten, cast down, and depress. When you have been beat down by ‘discourage’, you fall into a state of discouragement.

Discouragement is a saddened and cast down feeling we experience when we disallow the Word of God to have absolute dominion over our thought life. It is a deterrent, whose ultimate goal is to lead you away from God. Once discouragement has settled and permeated your heart, its doppelganger, desperation kicks in.

Desperation is the state of extreme anxiety. At this stage, you encounter the brutal assaults of distraction, misery, harassment, and nervousness from “the thing” that initially came against you. The continual onslaughts of “the thing” that opposes and suppresses you have brought you to this gloomy place called desperation.

When we are desperate, we become forgetful and apprehensive. We do not function at our best because we focus more on “the thing” rather than staying committed and steadfast to what the Word of God has said about the situation. While it is the enemy’s assignment to pursue and hassle you to the point of taking you off course, your job is to keep your guard at all times. 2 Timothy 2:3 says that we are to endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

There are many who are being “opposed” by the enemy. This word is a reminder that you are to take your position in your opposition, for the battle belongs to the Lord. The Bible declares that He that has begun the good work in you will complete it (Phil. 1:6).

God’s grace is more than enough to get you through the storms of life. By refueling your spiritual gas tank with the Word of God, your enemy will not be able to wear you down. Determine that you will finish what God has started. Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. Destroy the spirit of a quitter!

We Must Be Willing To Alter and Adjust So That The Process of Making Or Becoming Different Can Take Place

It really shouldn’t come as a surprise though. In Jesus’ days, the temples were filled with such people; they were called the Pharisees and the Sadducees. The Pharisees and the Sadducees were two of the most prominent religious groups in Judaism. Their religion was outward in form with no inward godliness of heart (Matt. 23:25). They were all about ‘traditions’ and keeping the letter of the law by their own interpretations.

They occupied their ‘office’ all in the name of the Lord, but their lives were morally lax and worldly. While appearing to hold to the laws of God, they really denied many of the teachings when they opposed Jesus’ wisdom and miracles. They’re obsession with ‘keeping the letter of the law’ blinded them from the truth that they were actually doing quite the opposite as they refused to recognize the depravity of their own nature.

If we look around today, we will see the spirit of the 21st Century Pharisees and Sadducees moving in our midst; this mindset or spirit still flows today. It is ‘working’ rather than ‘worshipping’. This spirit sits on the church boards, serves communion, handles the Lord’s money, etc.

Jesus’ message is ‘change’ and ‘repent’. The word change, in this case, is a noun, and it is the process in making or becoming different. To change in its verb form means alter or adjust. The word repent means to be sorry, apologize, or ask forgiveness. We must be willing to alter and adjust so that the process of making or becoming different can take place.

2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land.”

God’s Word should challenge us to change daily. The words Jesus spoke often pricked or offended the Pharisees and Sadducees because of their wicked ways. Does God’s Word offend or prick our hearts, or does it cause us to humble ourselves and repent?

To Know Him Is To Love Him - To Love Him Is To Trust Him

As believers, we are continually growing and learning; one can ALWAYS use a word of encouragement. I know I can. There are times when we can feel unequipped, inexperienced, and no matter how much we've prepared, experience those dreadful feelings of "OMGosh, Lord, can I really do this?" I know I have.

Despite these outburst of doubt, insecurities, and fear that try to invade and stampede its way through the beautiful helmet of my mind, I find a well of living water deep down inside, in the city of my soul that echoes the tender, yet, persuasive and confident voice of my Father's heart - I can do all things through Him.

When you know Him, you LOVE Him, when you love Him, you TRUST Him. When you trust Him, that conviction becomes the driving force that propels you to sail upon waters never crossed and tread through the darkest and deepest valleys of life.

As you continue to journey across uncharted territory, remember, His Word will be your roadmap and His Spirit will comfort you. His strength, love, and power will wrap around you like a warm blanket in the cold night seasons and serve to refresh you again during the sultry hot days.

Never lose sight of your mandate, vision, mission, and goals; for little is much when God is in it, and with God on your side, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

Seasonal Decisions Brings About Lifetime Changes

There are times when God will allow or appoint the things in our world to be shaken to remind us that He is the only unshakeable and unmovable foundation. Psalm 62:1-2 tells us that God is our Rock and our Fortress and we shall not be greatly moved.

James 1:5 says that God’s wisdom is ours for the asking. Your seasonal decision will bring about lifetime changes. So, choices made during a time of crisis should be considered prayerfully because misguided searches can cause you to end up somewhere in a ditch and off track. It is vital that during this time, one remain steadfast and focus through a deliberate practice of abiding in Him.

Don’t allow the enemy to take you off track by the surrounding chaos but allow the firm footing of Jehovah-Shammah, God’s Peace, to keep you prevailing forward. You will soon find that the greaves that shield your feet will protect you and keep you from falling apart.

When uncertainty sets in, beloved, and the stakes are high, bow down low. Submitting to the pain of God’s refining fire will thrust you into His truth like a bullet shot out of a pistol and straight into your destiny. You will soon find that the opposing wind will cause you to soar higher than all your circumstances.

What Am I Willing to Give Up for Him?

A watchman is someone who patrols or guards something in particular. God has called each of us as watchmen to guard or patrol many things in our lives. How well are we governing what the Lord has placed in our personal care?

Some of our sufferings are self-inflicted. There are distresses and miseries that I have undergone all due to the results of my undisciplined actions. There is no one to blame for it but me.

Like Adam, today, we try to shift the blame on someone or something else rather than facing the reality of our poorly made choices. We need to come out of denial and accept that we’ve been disorganized, undisciplined, and disobedient.

We’re inadequately managing our funds. We max out the credit cards and buy, buy, buy satisfying the untamed lust of our temporary WANTS, while completely disregarding or turning a blind eye to the need of our basic necessities and priorities. I have found that people will pay for what they want yet beg for what they need.

Sometimes it’s easier to shift the blame rather than being truthfully honest about the lack of restraint we exercise. We live outside of our means and then blame God, the job, the economy, or (and this is a good one), even the past for the hardship and trouble that our fruitless actions spawn. We’ve somehow gotten use to dancing to the blaming rhythm, and while this is not always the case in every situation, for many it is.

My personal weight gain is a result of lack of exercise, poor eating habits, late night eating, and just plain ole laziness. If I really want to lose weight and become better fit, then I will have to make a decision to stop eating late at night, discipline myself to eating healthier foods, and then subject myself to grueling exercises.

I personally know that when I want something bad enough, God has given me the ability and the power to make a conscious, dogmatic decision to change. I’ve done it before. The question then remains, how bad do I want this change and what am I willing to give up for it?

Case and point:

I was only 15 years old, just newly saved, and into my third month of accepting Christ into my heart. My preferred choice of cigarettes was Newport with a touch of menthol. I remember that I could not wait until church was over to go around the corner and satisfy the nicotine fit I was undergoing.

While some condemned me in their thoughts when they saw me (you could tell by the distorted, religious looks on their faces), the Lord, in His gracious and loving mercy knew that my flesh had some bad habits and a lot of catching up to do with my new spiritual walk in Christ. I was a work in progress and although God wasn’t going to send me to hell for smoking, it sure made me smell like I had been there every time I did. Remember, I was saved first, then, my deliverance from these awful bad habits came after, usually one at a time.

I knew that smoking was not good for my health, it would deteriorate my organs, probably cause cancer, and the possibility existed that I would meet my Maker a lot sooner if I did not give it up. But the pleasure, lust, and pull of this physical addiction kept me lighting up with the hopes that one day I would give it up and call it quits.

Let’s take look at over-indulgence. How many of us have had to deal with this ugly ogre? How about character development? How many of us are still working on integrity? How many of us still have bad attitudes that unmistakably and noticeably show up while waiting in the traffic lane, department store, or waiting room?

It is God’s desire to help us sever the bad habits that hinder and stump our growth, as well as, put an end to the things that causes infertility, poverty, and spiritual barrenness. As my relationship with the Lord began to flourish, I discovered my inner desire to stop smoking increased greatly. The more Christ and His Word increase was the more my bad habits decreased.

Feeding and filling your heart with the Word of God over long periods will empower you to prevail over your fleshy desires. But if we are not refueling our spiritual gas tank with spiritual nourishment, then we are more than likely to walk, talk, and behave carnal, never arriving to spiritual maturity. Some of us never receive our deliverance because we refuse to give up what “pleases” the flesh rather than surrendering them and laying them at the foot of the Cross.

If you find your bad habits continually prevailing over your desire to stop, quit, or change that which is causing unproductive fruit in your life, then there is just cause to believe there is a spiritual leak somewhere in your tank. Most of the time, we know where the leak is and what’s causing it.

The question still remains, how bad do I want this change and what am I willing to give up for it?

Suck It Up!

I am amazed that after a good downpour, gardens have a natural ability to suck it up. . .that is the excess water that has fallen. After the downpour, a garden usually looks muddy and messy; a typical result from the effects of a storm.

Although the excess invasion of water appears to be harmful at first, it is actually helping the garden flourish. You see, the excess water seeps into inconspicuous crevices that often materialize when the soil has become hard and dry. Once it enters, it dampens and moisturizes the deep, dry, and unseen dingy places.

We will sometimes experience the downpours of life. At times, it may feel like the water will overflow us, but if we allow the excess watering of God's Word to flood our lives, then we too, like the garden will experience a refreshing that will revive, rejuvenate, and revitalize the deep places of our thirsty souls.

Does your life have the ability to "suck it up"? Allow the rain in your life to eliminate, eradicate, and exterminate the dry and hard elements that cause infertility and unfruitfulness. When you "suck it up", you will begin to encounter a refreshing, restoring, and renewing that will transform your muddled garden into an amazing terrain.

To FORGIVE is to Set a Prisoner FREE and Discover the Prisoner Was YOU

There is something about the power of forgiveness. Forgiveness is the act of pardoning somebody for a mistake or wrongdoing. It is showing mercy, leniency, and clemency.

Jesus found it important to address the topic of forgiveness. He said, “For if you forgive people their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their trespasses [their reckless and willful sins, leaving them, letting them go, and giving up resentment], neither will your Father forgive you your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14,15 AMP).

Why is forgiveness so hard to express? This is very difficult for many people because it hurts when you have been wronged or betrayed by others especially those you have loved. But if we are to mirror our Father’s heart then forgiveness and mercy is to be a part of our character. Although there is no way around it, I cannot say that I have always found it easy to forgive.

There were times in my life when I thought I forgave someone for his wrongdoings only to find the Holy Spirit reveal that I hadn’t. I had buried deep within my heart RESENTMENT.

Resentment is an ill, angered, and bitter feeling caused by a sense of having been badly treated. If you have any of these symptoms, then you are in the stage of resentment. Let’s call it what it truly is.

What helped me during my process what the fact that the Father has forgiven me for all my mistakes and wrongdoings. When I think of the mercy He extends to me, it humbles me rather quickly to think who am I that I shouldn’t forgive others either.

God still loves you even though you are experiencing resentment and wants to help you with the process of letting go and giving it up. Sometimes the letting go is not instantaneous but if you reach out to Him during the times you feel angered and ill, He will help you. He will place a love and compassion to replace the cold and bitter feelings for that individual.

But you must not live in denial. When those feelings surface, be truthful to yourself and with God. Let Him know how you are really feeling and then ask Him to remove it.

Rainy Seasons Should Give Birth to Fruitfulness

April showers bring May flowers . . . This may be an old saying, but when we really think about it, there is so much truth behind it. The book of Ecclessiates tells us that to everything there is a season.

The showers in our lives serves two purposes - to uproot and wash away the debris that has infested and invaded our lives but then to prepare and make pliable our stony hearts so that new growth can take place.

But to wish away our rainy seasons would be like never bathing. So allow the rain in your life to wash the hurts and ills of your past, and then permit the power of God to sow in you the Seeds of Life. When the rain is over, you will begin to see your garden blossoming with buds of dreams, hope, and faith.

SMOOTH STONES or JAGGED ROCKS

When confronted with a Goliath-size problem, which way do you respond: "He’s too big to hit” or like David, “He’s too big to miss”?

How many times have we had to face to this menacing ogre? As long as we live on earth, Goliath and its sidekicks will always lie ahead in some valley waiting for our dare to cross over. New levels means new devils.

Goliath’s overgrown size is a typical example of how the enemy uses the magnitude of our problems to try to diminish our faith in God. However, the extent or enormities of our troubles do not size up to the power that lies within us. God has said in His Word that we are overcomers in this life because greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).

Have you ever wondered why David took five smooth stones? Well, in case you didn’t know, Goliath had four brothers, and the extra stones he took are symbolic of his preparedness.

David prepared himself for the “just in case” scenario. He had enough stones to take out his brothers in the event they decided to get into his way. He knew his opponent and he knew his target. David knew that his strength was not in his skill, the sling, or the smooth stone; he only needed them as a point of contact.

Let’s look at the instruments David chose:

If you were fighting someone twice your height and weight, and you had a chance to select a stone, what kind would you choose? I know that I would be inclined to pick the most jagged rock I could find. If at all possible, something with the sharpest, toothed point. Right?

However, this is not what David chose or used as his fighting tool. It is in this that I learned my lesson about smooth stones. A brief lecture in aerodynamics has taught me that smooth stones fly straight. My husband Bill likes to play golf. Every now and then, when he gets into a mood for swinging things, he will go into our backyard and whack a few golf balls. I found out that the balls that have dents or cuts on them don’t fly nearly as well or straight as the perfectly smooth ones.

So what is the big deal about smooth stones? Well, let’s first understand how a smooth stones comes about. Smooth rocks are formed by the fast, pounding streams of water and other rocks that rub on them. This process over a period of time allows the hard, pointed parts of the rock to smooth and even out.

Have you ever been rubbed the wrong way? Have you ever been accused, criticized, and mistreated? Has life ever grinded you down? Well, these encounters are designed to eradicate the rough spots in you. Getting rid of the rough spots is sometimes hard, but these elements are what make a smooth stone; and it will take a smooth stone to defeat the Goliath in your life.

Sometimes we will feel like what we are doing is insufficient, boring, or unimportant. David was only a shepherd boy tending his father’s flock. His job at times required him to switch from being “shepherd boy” to “errand boy” as he took food to his brothers at the battlefield.

Nevertheless, David never got angry but was obedient to his father’s wishes. Even when he received insults from his brother Eliab, did he show restrain. He was publicly insulted three times: 1) accused of being irresponsible by leaving the sheep, 2) his job in life had been degraded, and 3) he was accused of being prideful and wicked.

Despite the allegations, David exemplified outstanding character in the midst of a chaotic situation. Even though he was the youngest of the brothers, he was expressing an enormous amount of maturity, courage, and control, which catapulted him into the next phase of his destiny.

David did not place his confidence in his skill with the sling and stone but knew that they were only instruments used for God’s glory. He rested and trusted in the God of Israel because he knew that the battle belonged to the Lord.

God will use what is in your hands because little is much when God is in it. What is in your hands? When the troubles of life come parading and mocking at you, when the Goliaths in your life try to weaken and make small what God has begun, do what David did, come against them in the name of the Lord.

Sometimes believers attempt to make impressions that are way bigger than what truly is; sometimes the reasons behind are a lot deeper rooted than we know. Many live behind the mask of pretense, prestige, and power because of fear, low self-esteem, and other personal issues. Whatever the reason, it is the Lord’s desire to walk through the corridors of our wounded hearts so that He may put the spotlight of the Holy Spirit on them and overthrow the idols we’ve kept hidden for so long.

Since integrity doesn’t develop apart from a consistent resolve, there is a need for daily, ongoing transformation to be more like Him. I honestly haven’t always hit the mark of “integrity” but know that easy decisions never demand resolve. And just as victory is never accidental, neither is godliness. It is an everyday resolve to press forward one foot at a time – with determination.

Prayer: “Oh Lord, challenge me, convict me, change me so that every step I make will bring glory and honor to your Name.”

What is Your Garden of Life Producing?

A productive, healthy, and beautiful garden is the result of proper care on a continual basis. It is not merely enough to maintain a garden when you feel like it, for behind its outer beauty, much activity is occuring. While new flowers are springing forth and roots are re-establishing, with each growth spur, there are constant intruders trying to infiltrate its space. These invaders are part of the community and although they co-habit, they are very harmful to the augmentation and progression of its inhabitants. Weeds, unhealthy vines, unwanted twigs, and wild flowers can be annoying neighbors, and if not detected and uprooted early, will choke the life out of your garden. Our life is a garden and what we allow to co-habit with us determines our expansion. Our heart is like the soil; this is the place where the Seeds of Life are sown. Therefore, it must cultivated and watered continually in order for increase to take place. Healthy growth will never spring forth on hard, rocky soil because the sown seeds will never germinate and take root. What is your garden producing? Do people see growth and increase or do they simply see their old familiar, annoying neighbors?
